When most people think about choice, they often think of choosing what to do: what action to take, where to go, who to call, what to buy.
As well as actions, choice also pertains to thoughts: evaluating, considering, reviewing, planning, learning, etc. Thoughts of this nature help us do well in life. But then there are the thoughts that keep us stuck or obstruct us, such as judging, blaming, regretting, comparing and resisting. While almost everyone knows thoughts of doing are within their control, many people believe their actual thoughts are beyond their control. They just can't help it when their minds go off on such tangents.
All thought is subject to choice. Yet far too often what we choose to think is based on insufficient information, and when we make up something without validating our premises we're likely to come up with stories that aren't true. That's when our thoughts get us into trouble.
A quick trick to avoiding the mess created by untrue thoughts is to ask yourself, "What do I really know here, and what am I guessing at?" Then you have two choices: 1. You can stop stewing about what you do not know. 2. You can discover the true facts about what you do not know.
